THE SMOCK INDUSTRY

The smock industry has over the years been sidelined. Since the introduction of smock in the Ghanaian society, the industry has always struggle to survive and make a steady move despite all challenges it encounters. Weavers on the other hand, have often come out with complaint of low patronage of the product in spite of all that goes into the making of the dress.

Unlike Kentey and other traditionally recognize materials or wears, the smock industry is alleged or somewhat known to be the industry that have for long not had adequate support from government and other corporate bodies. Though it has been the way of expressing our kind gestures to diplomats who visits the country, nothing is seemingly done to salvage the poor state of the industry.

Governments have come and gone, but none has actually taken stance to address this situation. This has necessitated the involvement of the United Nation’s Joint Program on Human Security (UNJHS).The UN has an idea of seeing to it that, this canker is solved by promoting, marketing and rebranding smocks of the north mainly Daboya, Tamale and Yendi for both domestic and international market as well as providing people with jobs and boost the revenue of aggrieved weavers.

Speaking at program, the coordinator of the program Mr. Kwame Asante said that the group is bent on establishing a center for smock weavers. Mr. Asante reiterated that, the center when set up will be a first port of call for all brand of smock in the country for local and international markets. The joint UN body will also seek to allow weavers make proposals that will link them to various sources of funding that will implore weavers to bolster their work.

This initiative by the Joint UN will help surmount the poor state of the smock industry and the challenges that has for long not been addressed and also lift the welfare of the weavers who comprise the industry.
